5 Easy Nail Care Secrets

Often we are so concerned about keeping our skin, hair and body looking top shape, that we may forget that our hands and nails need the exact same tender, loving, care. Your hands and nails need to be taken care of at all times, especially because you do everything with your hands.

Since you can’t avoid the fact that people will see your hands whether you like it or not, here are some important and great nail care tips to help you take good care of your hands and nails.

Moisturise: First of all, we all know how moisturising our face is so crucial to keeping it looking healthy, soft and rejuvenated. So why would you not want the same for your hands and nails? To keep your hands and nails looking hydrated and soft, I suggest using hand creams which contain natural oils (such as Jojoba or Lavender oil) for strengthening and hydrating the hands, nails and cuticles.

My current favourite hand cream at the moment is The Body Shop Wild Argan Oil hand cream. The hand cream has been treating my hands and nails exceptionally well. Argan oil is high in vitamin E which is great for reducing wrinkles and keeping the skin soft and hydrated.

Keep it natural: Okay, so I’m probably one of the biggest lovers of long, acrylic nails (yes, I’m aware that acrylic is ‘bad’ for your nails). However, too much of anything is bad for you. So if you’re someone like a me, learn to sometimes give your nails a break.

Continuously treating your nails to acrylic or gel treatments can make your nails weak and brittle. The formula used in the acrylic and gelish is hard on the nails. So it is always a great idea to swap the bold colours and nail arts for simple clear nail polish. Your nails will thank you in the long-run when they are looking healthy and strong.

Cut, file and buff: I recently learned that filing your nails in a straight line, back and forth can cause hectic damage to your nails. Apparently the right way of doing it, is to do it in an angle in one movement and direction starting with the sides of the nail. Also metal nail filers are big no, no. I currently use the Essence banana nail filer, it is not harsh on the nails and is great for shortening and shaping the nails. Filing nails once a week will keep them resistant from breaking easily. Don’t forget to buff your nails to keep them smooth, this will allow for easy  nail polish application.

Base it and top coat it: To protect my nails from some of the harsh chemicals found in bright nail polish colours I use the Essence Ultra Strong Nail Hardener Polish. Whenever you’re applying nail polish to your nails, be sure to apply a protective clear base coat onto your nails to protect the nail plate.

After applying your nail polish seal the look with a top coat. This will prevent the nail polish from chipping making it last longer. I would suggest the Essence Gel-look Top Coat to give your nails that gelish finish and keep the nail polish intact for a much longer duration.

Don’t heat dry it: When you are applying your nail polish always make sure it is in thin layers so it can dry quicker. Let your nail polish air dry don’t blow-dry your nails or apply any kind of heat onto nails. The skin around your nails is super sensitive and therefore applying heat on areas such as the cuticle can dry out the skin leaving it damaged.

NZURI TIP: If you’re in a rush and need to dry your hands pronto, place your hands in freezing ice water for 3 – 5 mins. It will dry up the nail polish quickly, without it smudging and creating air bubbles.

Getting your nails done at a salon is always fun since you won’t have to worry about smudging the nail polish when it comes to having to use the weak hand.

However, if you get your favourite girlfriends to come over for a slumber party and encourage them to bring some of their favourite nail polish colours. It will make getting your nails done at home so much more fun and of course, cost-effective.

I am a person who loves subtle colours on my hands and some of my favourite nail polish colours, which are basically just nude colours include Wet n Wild, ‘Private Viewing’, Essence, ‘Dare It Nude’ and Smudge, ‘Smooth Choc’ (currently wearing as seen in the below image).

NZURI TIP: To help you find the perfect nude for your skin tone go for a nude colour that is two shades lighter than your skin tone. Or if you want the colour to pop and be noticeable go for a nail polish colour that appears to be two shades darker than your skin tone.

  1. That first sentence is so true for me. I spend tons of money on good face and body moisturizers that I often times forget to take care of my hands – which is very bad in this cold weather. Great tips, and I’m loving your blog. Keep it up!
